Ministries

Umufasha:

A joint outreach effort of the Heights and Shalom congregations of Urban Heights.

Umufasha means helper in the Kinyarwanda languages. We help women assimilate by providing health, ESL, and parenting education. Umufasha serves women who have recently immigrated from Rwanda, Congo, Burundi and Kenya.

The group has recently identified significant needs. These include:

-Medical Care and Education

-Language

-Parenting

-Transportation and Interpretation

A community health grant has been submitted, a partnership has been established with the local school district and ESL instructors and a grant for childcare have been secured.  Further research is being done into other potential grant funding.

This organization has seen first-hand what happens when women don’t understand the language, culture and medical practices of their new country. The strength of this organization is the partnership between East African women who understand the needs of recent immigrants and women who have immigrated generations before and know the resources of the community.

Benefits the Urbandale and Windsor Heights Food Pantry.

Following a conference that focused on developing a Healthy Polk County 2015, Urban Harvest was born. Land behind the church building was tilled into a 90 x90 garden space that provides fresh vegetables and fruit to the local pantry.  These items are accessible to pantry clients on a daily basis and help supplement the monthly 3-day allotment.  The garden is tended by 6-8 volunteers from and is able to provide several tons of fresh produce to the pantry during the growing season.

For more information on harvest times and work on the garden like us on

All Church Retreat 2017

In June of each year, The Heights and Shalom, the two congregations of Urban Heights Covenant Church meet together at the Twin Lakes Bible Camp in Manson, Iowa for fellowship with one another, teaching from God’s Word by a guest speaker, and fun. Together we have explored what it means to grow deeper in Christ and to serve for Him, like Him, and with Him. The camp, which is about 2 hours away, is ideal because it offers wonderful accommodations, delicious meals, and numerous activities like golf, swimming, canoeing, paddleboat, a 30 ft. indoor climbing wall, miniature golf, soccer, baseball, bike riding or walking along the bike trail, ping pong, crafts, basketball, carpet ball, Frisbee golf, and volleyball.
